Built in 1897, at 1 073 feet, the distillery is one of the highest in Scotland, and its name derives from the Gaelic for 'meeting place' of sheep and cattle drovers. The coldest inhabited place in Scotland (Met Office, 1994), it has had fragile beginnings: five owners in 30 years before James Buchman & Co bought it in 1926. The distillery was modernised in 1968 and refitted in 1995.
